Rose Petal
Beneath The Surface
The seemingly smooth surface of a rose petal, when magnified 2,300 times using a scanning electron microscope, is actually covered with tiny humps called ‘papillae’. These projections from the petal's surface cells are often swollen and covered with wax to help reduce water loss fro the flower. The colour here is cosmetic, added later to make the image look more like a rose petal.
