Beneath The Surface
This light micrograph reveals the scales that give the butterfly Uransia madagascariensis its iridescent colours. It is magnified 860 times. In life each scale is about 20 micrometers across. The bright colours are not due to the pigment. The spacing of the scales' surface texture causes optical interference (like a thin film of oil in water), creating the vivid colours that we see here.
