Mahogany Wood
Beneath The Surface
This transverse section through a piece of mahogany wood is magnified 400 times using a light microscope. It shows the bundles of tubular cells that make up the tree's vascular system, responsible for carrying water and nutrients from the soil. The slice of wood was taken from a living - or at least recently living - tree, and the double walls of the cells that make up the tubes are visible.
