Human Cerebellum
Just Out Of Reach
This light micrograph shows a stained section of healthy human cerebellum, magnified 40 times. Responsible for controlling movement and balance, this part of the brain has a deeply folded surface and sits towards the back of the head beneath the cerebrum, the two main hemispheres of the brain. The cortex, or outer layer, of the cerebellum is divided into an outer region (pale orange, grainy stain) containing nerve fibers, and an inner layer (smooth orange satin) of nerve cells. The branching pale tissue consists of bundles of nerve fibres.
