Abdominal Artery
Just Out Of Reach
This false-colour arteriogram taken of a healthy person shows the arteries that supple blood to the kidneys, spleen and liver. The large vessel running vertically is the abdominal aorta; the backbone is visible behind it. Offshoots supply the kidneys (middle). Above and to the right the splenic artery connects to the spleen. At top left, the hepatic artery feeds the liver. At the bottom of the picture the abdominal aorta splits into two lower branches, the left and right common iliac arteries, which supply the legs.
