Leaf Skeleton
Just Out Of Reach
This image is of a dead magnolia leaf, magnified 20 times. Bacteria and feeding insects have broken down the leaf tissue to leave an intricate latticework of veins - the leaf skeleton. The veins are more resistant to decay than the tissues in between because they are stiffened with lignin-reinforced cells. Each vein contains bundles of tubes that carried water and food to the cells of the living leaf.
