Venus Flytrap
Just Out Of Reach
This photograph shows the paired leaf of the Venus flytrap (Dionaea muscipula). The paired, hinged leaves snap shut when a fly lands on them. The glowing corona effect is achieved by photographing the plant in the presence of an electric field, a technique known as Kirlian photography. Electric discharges from the object are captured on film, giving the appearance of a corona of light. The discharges are affected by temperature, pressure, moisture and, some believe, the subject's level of health.
