Flooding in Mozambique
Planet Earth
A combination of weeks of heavy rain, followed by the arrival of Cyclone Eline on 22 February 2000, caused catastrophic flooding of the Limpopo River in southern Mozambique. The deluge lasted for three weeks, with floodwaters rising 8 meters above the normal river level, and nearly a million people were affected. This infrared image, taken by the SPOT-2 satellite, vividly shows the green floodwaters, heavy with silt, mingling with the red signature of vegetation. Fluffy white cumulus clouds have formed over the land.
