Betsiboka River, Madagascar
Planet Earth
Over the course of the twentieth century forest cover of the island of Madagascar decreased from about 90 per cent to just 10 per cent, due to agricultural expansion and timber extraction. The resulting eroded soil shows up red in this shuttle photograph of the Betsiboka River. Satellite mapping has enabled scientists to trace the growth of silt bars in the estuary of the Betsiboka; some are now sufficiently permanently to support woodland.
