Colorado River
Delta, USA
Planet Earth
The dark hemispherical shape at the bottom of this aerial photograph is the main channel of the Colorado River. Above, distributary channels guide water from the river across the delta's sandbars, made of sediment, towards the Gulf of California. The low gradient and loose substrate encourage the formation of the branching, tree-like patterns seen here, which are typical of deltaic systems.
