Parana River Delta, Argentina
Planet Earth
This coloured satellite image shows a small section of the vast Parana River Delta. Multiple channels are visible (lower right) flowing east into the Rio de la Plata, an inlet on Argentina's Atlantic coast lying north of Buenos Aires. The Parana River flows 4,850 kilometers southwards from its source in the Brazilian highlands through Paraguay and Argentina. The delta's apex, where the river begins to branch, is 300 kilometers north of where the channels now meet the sea. The delta is advancing steadily, with 165 million tonnes of alluvial sediment deposited each year.
