X-ray Image of the Sun
Into The Heavens
Temperatures in the Sun's corona reach two million kelvin, whereas the visible surface of the Sun is only around 5,770 kelvin. These extremely high temperatures mean that the Sun's outer atmosphere emits a significant proportion of its radiation as x-rays. This image was taken by an x-ray telescope in orbit above Earth's atmosphere. Such a picture would be impossible to obtain from the ground because the Earth's atmosphere is opaque to x-rays.
