Beneath the fiery surface of the Sun, solar plasma (highly ionized gas) churns constantly, generating strong magnetic fields that extend far into the two million-degree solar corona. Along the field lines, enormous erupting loops and jets of plasma are channeled several million kilometers into the corona. They emerge from hotspots on the Sun that are many times the size of the Earth, eventually plunging back into the Sun, driven by magnetic forces. These are false-coloured, ultraviolet TRACE (Transition Region and Coronal Explorer) satellite images.
