Surface of the
Moon's Far Side
Into The Heavens
Until the Space Age, no one knew what lay on the far side of the Moon. One nineteenth-century astronomer suggested that there would be water, an atmosphere and even lush green vegetation. This out-of-sight world has now been mapped in great detail by a succession of orbiting satellites and, though unlike the near side, it is mysterious no longer. This picture was taken from Apollo 11, the mission that put the first man on the Moon in 1969.
