Butterfly Nebula
(Hubble 5)
And Beyond
Hubble 5 is a ‘butterfly’ or bipolar planetary nebula 2,200 light years away, and was formed when an ageing red giant star threw off its outer layers. The new outburst was restricted by a ring of previously ejected stellar material, so instead of expanding into a sphere, the gas remains pinched in at the equator. This constrains the recent gas outburst into two lobes driven outwards by stellar winds from the extremely hot central star. This image was taken by the Hubble Space Telescope in 1997.
