Dust Band, (NGC 5128)
And Beyond
This Hubble Telescope image shows the dense band of dust that encircles NGC 5128, silhouetted against the bright nucleus. The dust is not totally opaque everywhere and so the light filters through from background stars. The light is both dimmed and reddened since dust in its path absorbs blue light from the stars. On the fringes of the dust, young blue stars are visible, their formation triggered by the merger of galaxies.
