Spiral Galaxy M83
(NGC 5236)
And Beyond
In this Anglo-Australian Telescope photograph, the sopiral galaxy M83 probably looks very much as our own galaxy would from a position 20 million light years above its plane. Like the Milky Way, it is composed of billions of stars and huge clouds of gas and dust organized in a graceful spiral. Older, yellow stars are concentrated around the central nucleus while younger blue stars and clouds of red glowing star-building material form the trailing spiral arms.
