Fornax Galaxy Cluster
And Beyond
The cluster of galaxies in the constellation Fornax displays a variety of galaxy types. At the lower right, face-on, is a barred-spiral galaxy (NGC 1365), and near the centre are two bright elliptical galaxies (NGC 1399 and NGC 1404). Named after the small and inconspicuous constellation in which it appears, this cluster lies around 70 million light years away. This optical image was produced by digitally combining photographs taken with blue and red sensitive plates by the UK Schmidt Telescope.
